Approximately 19 million hens are suffering on egg farms at any given time in Australia to meet consumer demand – this number is difficult to comprehend.

Many of these hens on egg farms endure harsh living conditions, are subjected to overcrowding, lack natural light, and are denied the freedom to forage or feel the grass beneath their feet. Their physical and emotional well-being is ignored, leaving them to suffer in silence.

At around 18 months of age, after these hens have given all that their fragile bodies have to give and no longer meet the commercial egg-laying standards, they are typically culled and replaced with younger hens that will face the same fate.

At ‘Til The Cows Come Home, we believe that these hens don’t deserve to be culled. The very least that these hens can be given is a second chance at life– a life where they can experience love, compassion and safety- their worth valued beyond what they give.

Whether you are looking for companions (or companions with the bonus of eggs), we encourage you to give a rescued hen a chance and adopt today.

Rescue hens deserve a second chance where they can be loved as companions, not commodities.

Want to learn more about what really happens on egg farms, take a read of our blog here.

Throughout the year, we hold Rescue Hen Adoption Days in various regions across Australia. Because our rescue operations depend on when farmers have retired hens ready to move on – and when they choose to offer them an alternative to culling – adoption days can arise in your region at short notice.

Most farm animals have a longer life expectancy than many domestic pets. Various breeds of farm animals can live beyond 20 years, which means their owners must be prepared for a long-term commitment that includes providing appropriate feed, meeting ongoing healthcare needs, and ensuring that they have suitable living conditions. Sadly, for these animals, their owner’s life circumstances can change, leaving them in need of a new home.

Rehoming a beloved companion is a difficult reality that many pet owners face, whether it be domestic or farm animals. While some owners may sadly give up on their companions, others will make every effort to ensure that these animals are loved just as much—or even more—in their next home.

Farm animals are at a high risk of being rehomed to someone who views them as commodities.

Thanks to the kind support and generosity of donors, Til The Cows is able to offer a safe rehoming service for farm animals, ensuring they do not end up in the wrong hands and will continue to be cherished as companions, not commodities. 🤎

Meet Bitty, a beautifully natured Turkey. Hand-raised from just six months old, Bitty has blossomed into a friendly and gentle companion. Bitty has an inquisitive and sociable personality, which will bring warmth and joy to anyone lucky enough to welcome him into their lives.

Bitty’s current owner has shared that he is a music lover and will happily coo along to tunes. His favourite treat is a simple slice of bread – we’ve been told that he will even show an adorable happy dance, expressing his love for a treat of bread.

By day, Bitty loves to explore his surroundings, showing off a little adventurous side to him, but you’ll often find him picking a quieter spot near his coop. With a flock, we are sure that Bitty will feel at ease exploring more. Bitty likes to be up high.

Bitty has been described as ‘very friendly and accustomed to people’.

Bitty is currently being cared for by his family, but is looking for a new home as his current owner wants him to have his own flock and experience life beyond what his current carer can provide.

Bitty would thrive in a home full of companionship and opportunities for more exploration and socialising.

The ideal home for Bitty includes:

– A secure coop with a perch or high resting spots for Bitty
– An open free-range area with natural cover, such as trees and shrubs, to prevent him from feeling too exposed (especially while he settles into a new environment)
– Company of other turkeys or birds
– A gradual introduction method, such as keeping him in a nearby separate enclosure, so he can get used to the sights and sounds of the main flock.

If you’re seeking a companion to bring endless joy to your flock, look no further than Bitty. If you believe you can provide Bitty with a caring, vibrant home where he can shine, please click the ‘Apply to Adopt’ button below to start your adoption journey today!

🚚Transport is being offered by the owner up to 100km from Hoppers Crossing.

In Australia, millions of cows live on farms across the country. Most are treated as commodities, valued only for what their bodies can produce. Their existence as sentient beings – capable of feeling, forming bonds, and experiencing emotion – is too often overlooked.

Cows are raised for many purposes: for their meat, their milk, their hides, and even for entertainment. No matter the reason, most will have their lives cut short, with little opportunity to experience true freedom or affection. Even those treated more gently often meet the same heartbreaking end.

Despite their intelligence and emotional depth, cows are frequently underestimated. Much like dogs or cats, they form strong social bonds and experience joy, fear, and grief.

Daisy’s story is different.

She was raised on a farm, but when the farmer decided to move on, she was left behind. Why she wasn’t sold is unknown, but we are grateful that her life continued. With no one assigned to care for her, a kind-hearted person stepped in and took Daisy into her care – and into her heart.

While many might have seen Daisy as a financial opportunity, her rescuer couldn’t bear the thought of harm coming to her. Unable to keep Daisy herself, she was determined to find her a safe and loving future.

Amid the sadness faced by so many other cows, Daisy is among the fortunate few. Daisy is now living safely and freely, able to experience the world as she deserves while she waits for the next chapter of her journey – a forever home.

Daisy is ready to be welcomed into a home as a loved companion, not a commodity. 🤎

Meet Daisy, a beautiful one-eyed cow with a heart full of resilience and a strong-willed personality. Daisy’s unique perspective on life, likely shaped by her missing eye, has not hindered her ability to thrive and live life to the fullest.

Her love for hay is evident, as she’s often the first to greet you when it’s feeding time. Daisy has proven to be friendly toward humans and can often be hand-fed through fencing, allowing a bond of trust to slowly form with her human friends (with patience and careful navigation).

Daisy is notably large, but her size is appropriate for her age and breed.

She navigates her world confidently, often asserting herself within the herd through the use of her horns. Daisy would be best suited to a home with other horned cows or larger steers; however, it’s important to note that she may use her horns toward other animals (this could be a short-term while she settles into a secure home or a longer-term). This behaviour is likely to assert herself within the herd, given that she has one eye.

Daisy has not displayed aggression toward humans and was able to be treated by a vet and get into the crush. That said, she would do best on a property cared for by an experienced cow owner who understands herd dynamics and can help guide her appropriately.

Of all the animals in the herd, Daisy has been described by the owner as the friendliest with humans and the most trusting. She has gained trust easily.

With cows coming and going nearby, a recently present bull, and calving cows, Daisy has experienced many changes in a short period of time. With some stability and care, we are very confident that she will be a gentler herd member.

Although Daisy may not be suitable for homes with children, she would thrive with someone who appreciates her robust presence and values gentle interaction. Daisy would be well-suited as a loved paddock friend or lawnmower companion.

If you think that you could provide Daisy with a loving home, please click the ‘Apply to adopt‘ button below to contact us and start your adoption journey today.

Please note:

– Daisy has only one eye; the other has healed and grown over completely. After a recent vet check, the vet believes that the eye may have been removed.
– Last had a vet check: 5th January 2026
– Wormed: 5th January 2026
– Vaccinated: 5th January 2026
– An experienced farm animal adopter is best suited for Daisy. (Not to be used for farming, such as breeding, processing, fur or other – to be adopted as a companion/pet only)

🚚 Transport to be determined upon adoption application. The adopter will need to cover part of the cost of using a professional transporter. Adoption donation applies.

Approximately 19 million hens are suffering on egg farms at any given time in Australia to meet consumer demand— this number is difficult to comprehend.

Throughout the year we hold Rescue Hen Adoption Days in various regions across many states in Australia. As our hen rescue operations are subject to farmers– having retired hens to move on and farmers that want to give their retired hens an alternative option to culling– our hen adoption days can pop up in your region at any time. Below are the regions in Victoria where we are currently working to hold hen adoption days.

📍Hastings
🗺️ Location: Petstock, Hastings
📅 9th August 2025.
🕥 9.30 am – 10.30 am

Eager to adopt?
To organise a successful hen rescue, we rely on three key components: egg farmers who are ready to give their hens a second chance, adopters, and hen rescue drivers. If you’re excited about adopting and eager to help make a hen rescue possible by volunteering as a Hen Rescue Driver, we’d love to have you on our team! Click here to express your interest in joining our volunteer community today!

About the hens:
Breed: Hyline brown
Age: Approx 18 months of age

We are now collecting hen adopter waitlists for the above regions. If you are interested in adopting some rescue hens, please click the ‘Apply to Adopt’ button below to start your adoption journey today.

All adopters need to have a secure coop, and hens must have access to free-range and be cared for by their adopter regardless of how long they lay.

Important adopter notes: these hens have come from egg farms, some hens may need a little more TLC than others. Hens should be treated for lice, mites and worms. High protein and quality pellets should be fed to hens their adoptive hens once they arrive, with scraps being a treat.

We are monitoring the hen flu carefully, hen days may be cancelled at the last minute. We will not operate hen rescue in the exclusion zones or within a 3-hour radius of one. To learn more about the bird flu risks, please click here.

Each year, millions of animals are born on farms, bred for their body, milk, wool or fur. Their lives are often seen as nothing more than a commodity.

On small farms, a few lucky ones are spared. Perhaps by a bond with a human, a child’s plea, or simply by luck. But even those who escape immediate harm live under constant uncertainty. A change in circumstance, financial hardship, or inconvenience can seal their fate.

Tiger, Lucky and their three sisters lived a cherished life on a small farm, surrounded by affection. But one day, things changed for the worse. This sisterhood was also now at risk, facing euthanasia like so many others on the farm before them.

While our team searched for a safe haven, Lucky gave birth to twins, and Tiger gave birth to one lamb. Hearing of new life being born is typically a special moment, but as the flock continued to grow, so did their risk of euthanasia and our concerns for this family.

Initially, five lives were at risk; now there were eight.

We knew that it wouldn’t be long until the other ewes that were expecting would give birth. Our rescue team had to move fast to find this ever-increasing family refuge.

Thanks to the compassion and generosity of our donors, we were able to step in and provide support quickly, welcoming this family into foster care. They were now safe, and we could celebrate Tiger and Lucky becoming mothers.

Today, Tiger, Marley, Lucky, Olive and August are thriving, ready for a forever home where they will be seen as companions, not commodities.

Lucky, a nurturing and friendly ewe, gave birth to her sweet twins, Olive and August, while in foster care. Lucky’s gentle nature and love for a good scratch make her a joy to be around.

Taken away from their mothers shortly after birth, Fraser, Georgie and Kosi have endured a traumatic start to life, a beginning no living being deserves. Fraser, Georgie and Kosi were rescued from the harsh realities of a dairy farm. In an industry that often views calves as mere byproducts, many are stripped from their mothers shortly after birth, destined for slaughter or left to perish when deemed unviable.

Male calves born on dairy farms are commonly deemed as “waste” or “surplus”, as they offer little financial gain to the farmer. These calves are often “disposed of” on the farm or sent on a truck to a slaughterhouse.

Similarly, females born on dairy farms are often kept for future milk production – a life of being milked continuously before facing the sad fate of the slaughter truck once their milk production decreases at around 5 years of age. Many female calves, like Georgie, are born as “surplus” and are also deemed as “waste” when dairy farmers don’t need more female cows to raise for future milking.

Fraser, Georgie and Kosi were among the fortunate ones to have been rescued. Sadly, this isn’t the reality for hundreds of thousands of calves born on dairy farms each year. Thanks to the generosity of our community and donors, two more lives have been spared.

Now healthy and feeling cared for, Fraser, Georgie, and Kosi are ready to find their forever home where they will be loved as companions, not commodities.

Meet Lambert, Bruno, Rocky, Arnold, Leo, Lucky, Elle, Jackie, Lady, and Tiger – a wonderful group of hand-raised sheep looking for their forever home.

These gentle souls were rescued as lambs after their mothers rejected them or passed away at birth in the paddocks of a local farm. Thanks to the dedication of their rescuers, they were bottle-fed around the clock and lovingly raised to become treasured members of the family, growing into the adored, self-sufficient, calm companions they are today.

Each of these sheep has a unique personality that makes them a joy to be around. Lambert holds a special place, being the first rescue. Happy to cuddle with you in the paddock, he’s truly a sweetheart.

Lucky, Rocky, Arnold, Elle, and Bruno especially adore pats, happily soaking up all the affection they can get.

Meanwhile, Tiger’s vocal personality adds a little extra character to the group, but it’s never disruptive – just her unique way of standing out. Every member of this flock reflects a serene and gentle nature, beautifully shaped by their loving and attentive upbringing, making them a delight to care for.

This harmonious group is well-accustomed to life alongside other animals, from towering cows to playful calves and loyal dogs, a true testament to their calm and adaptable nature. Their ideal home would be with someone experienced in caring for sheep or other farm animals, or who is willing to work with a vet to support the needs of any sheep who may be in lamb. A spacious, secure paddock offers the perfect setting for them to graze and thrive together as a flock.

Time is of the essence for these lovely sheep, as they urgently need a safe, loving home to avoid a tragic fate.

If you have the experience, space, and heart for these affectionate and peaceful companions, click the ‘Apply to Adopt’ button below to start your journey with Lambert, Bruno, Rocky, Arnold, Leo, Lucky, Elle, Jackie, Lady, and Tiger. This is your opportunity to transform their lives–and discover the joy it brings to yours.

Additional

Lambert has a limp caused by a foot issue, though it doesn’t seem to impact him too much.

Some or all of the sheep are suspected to be pregnant. Their adopter must have sheep or farm animal caring experience or be someone who will seek vet advice to provide any mothers & their lambs with support. Any vet costs to support the pregnancy and lambs would be a cost for the adopter.

Transportation is being provided as part of their adoption to get them safely to their new home.
