Can you welcome Ella into your home?

Most farm animals have a longer life expectancy than many domestic pets, with some breeds living well beyond 20 years, like Ella, who is now 27. This longevity requires owners to be prepared for a long-term commitment, one that includes providing proper nutrition, ongoing veterinary care, and maintaining suitable living conditions throughout the animal’s life.

Sadly, this means as animals age, and we alongside them, their needs can sometimes be missed. Often, older animals are surrendered into our care as their owners can no longer care for them. However, this makes animals like Ella perfect for new adopters, as she requires far less attention and care than a younger animal.

Farm animals require more than just affection; they need an owner who can fulfil their care requirements.

Ella was rescued by another animal welfare charity over 22 years ago and was placed in a home with her previous caretaker. However, her caretaker faced an unforeseen change in their ability to care for Ella, which was evident when she arrived in poor condition– she had ticks on her and her hooves were severely overgrown and in bad condition.

While Ella was loved and the previous caretaker found it hard to say ‘goodbye’, it was evident that Ella’s care needs weren’t being met.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, Ella was taken into foster care. Ella was immediately treated for ticks upon her arrival, and a farrier and a dentist have treated her. Ella is also now up to date with all other health care needs to allow her to thrive in a loving home where she will be loved as a companion.

Meet Ella, a gentle and sweet-natured middle-aged female donkey who is ready to charm you with her endearing personality. With her love for nose scratches and treats, Ella’s playful demeanour is sure to win you over. Whether she’s walking alongside you on a lead or exploring on her own, Ella enjoys the companionship and freedom of her own pace.

Ella is on a journey of learning to trust human companions, especially when it comes to her hindquarters and around food. This lovely lady is quite the communicator, letting you know her boundaries with a snort or if she’s uncomfortable by showing a little kick. Her gentle guidance is a testament to her intelligence and her journey toward complete trust.

Ella thrives in the company of another donkey friend, she will need to be adopted into a home with a donkey companion (gelding or female). The ideal adopter for Ella is someone with patience and understanding who is willing to invest time in building a strong bond. Giving her space when needed will foster her confidence and individuality.

Medical note: Ella has recently seen the dentist, farrier and vet. She has had her annual vaccination, wormed, and two of her three hendra vaccinations. Her third Hendra booster is due in October 2025. Ella will need 6 weekly farrier visits as she has gone many years without hoof care. She will also need annual dental checkups. The adopter must provide details of an accessible vet, farrier, and dentist.
* Must not be used for future breeding.

Other: Ella must be adopted into a home with another donkey.
