Where are you located

We rescue and adopt unwanted animals Australia-wide. We have foster homes located in various states Australia-wide. We are always expanding our foster home network into new states and regions.

We have a unique model and don’t have a dedicated sanctuary. Instead, we use a foster home model which allows us to rescue more animals as we aren’t restricted by land capacity, we open foster homes where animals need us and we aren’t restricted to one location.

The generous donations that we receive are allocated towards animal care such as providing food, shelter, medical treatment, and transport services to rescue animals in need and relocate them to foster care or their forever homes.  We also allocate donations to fundraising and marketing. This includes vital fundraising costs, advertising animals that are available for adoption and promoting our mission to reach potential adopters and supporters. Lastly, donations are allocated to the operational costs of ‘Til The Cows Come Home.

In the dairy industry, male calves are usually considered “waste”, as they do not produce milk they do not result in much profit. Because of this most of the calves that come into our care are male. 
 
While female calves go on to be used for their milk or meat, it’s standard practice in Australia for male calves to be killed shortly after birth. As a result, ‘Til The Cows rescues as many male calves as we can before it’s too late.
 
The male calves that are adopted through us are almost always steers. A steer is a male bovine that has been desexed at a young age. As a result of this process, steers physically and behaviourally mature differently from bulls. 
 
While bulls tend to be more aggressive and muscular, a steer’s temperament and physical appearance more closely resemble that of a cow. Therefore, steers can make excellent companions as they are more docile and easier to manage.
 
It can be harder for us to rehome a bull because not many people have the experience or land size often needed to adopt bulls. Additionally, bulls can be harder to rehome because they generally should not be adopted into an environment with another female in sight. When a female cow is around, a bull can become aggressive towards other males and may break through fencing to get to the female.
 
On the other hand, steers are more likely to be adopted as they have a more docile temperament and are not affected in this way by the presence of other bovine, including females. It’s easier for steers to be friendly and gentle with humans – we’ve received so much feedback from our adopters saying how sweet and affectionate their steers are.
 
By increasing adoption rates through desexing male calves, fewer calves will be abandoned or killed.
 
At ‘Til The Cows Come Home, it’s our mission to save as many farmed animals as we can, including bulls. By desexing male calves to become steers instead of bulls, we can save so many more lives through rehoming, fostering and adoption. Want to know more about the difference between bulls and steers? Any farm animal born that is unwanted or considered waste, and whose fate will otherwise result in death – we take in these animals. These can include (but are not limited to):

  • Injured or sick animals. If an animal develops a disability, injury or illness we will take them into our foster homes to be treated. We always aim to give them the best chance of survival, no matter the costs. Or if there are no other options we help them to pass peacefully and safely.
  • Families who can no longer home companions. Whether goats, horses, pigs, alpacas, sheep or even an entire herd, we help families rehome animals that they can no longer care for. We help by finding the animals safe and loving new homes.
How do I register my adoption interest for future animal adoption listings

To register your adoption interest and sign up for our adopter waitlist, please complete the enquiry form.

All animals we adopt have an adoption donation, the donation amount varies for each animal. All donations received allow us to continue rescuing and rehoming unwanted farmed animals.

Animals need to be adopted in pairs, unless being adopted into a home with animals of the same breed. Some of the animals we adopt are listed for adoption as bonded pairs or trios, we always keep bonded animals together as their happiness is our priority. Depending on the urgency of the adoption, there are some exceptions.

Unfortunately we don’t have volunteer drivers that are able to transport animals to adopters’ homes. All adopters need to arrange safe transport following our transport guides. In some regions we have contacts for trusted contract transporters, and we would be happy to help obtain a transport quote for you.

Yes! A lot of our adopters are first-time adopters. We have care guides where you can learn everything you need to know about their care needs. You will also have the support of the Foster Carer during the adoption process and then ongoing post-adoption support from our adoption team and the Foster Care Coordinator.

Why is foster care so important?

To give animals who are deemed ‘waste products’ by the industry they were born into the opportunity to receive the care and love they deserve and ultimately be adopted into loving forever homes.

  • Learn to trust people while they wait to get adopted
  • Receive medical treatment; health checks, desexing.
  • Have a chance at life.

 

The love, dedication and care these animals receive at our foster homes gives them a chance at a happy life.

Should you wish to foster with us, we ask the following of you:

  • Are aged 18 years or older
  • Be the owner or have permission from the owner to use your property
  • Have a safe and secure environment for the animals in your care
  • Have reliable transport for emergency vet visits
  • Be able to provide ongoing daily care
  • Have read all relevant foster carer information
  • Follow all our policies and procedures

 

Absolutely! We understand that all our foster carers live busy lives.

We believe that by volunteering to be foster carers, your children will gain invaluable life experiences while helping animals find their forever homes.

For those who work full-time we recommend fostering animals like hens who require minimal care.

It is possible to work part-time and care for animals like calves who require more time and commitment.

But it’s important to know there will occasionally be times when animals are sick and require additional care.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide specific dates each animal will be adopted. Each circumstance is unique, but we do our very best to keep you updated. We do get a general idea on when the animals do get rehomed, for example for calves it is usually between 2- 40 days and hens can be rehomed in a month depending on where you live.

Yes, we provide/cover costs for all supplies you need including bedding, food and vet care. All we require from you is time and love!

Alternatively you can join our Five Dollar Friday club and feed a calf for as little as the price of a coffee each week. If a one-off yearly subscription is more your thing you can become a member or you can even get your friends and family involved by creating a Facebook fundraiser!
